"You need two pieces of paper when playing Championship Bowls...

...a small sheet to record the events you win, and a much larger one to write down the ones you don't"- (John Morgan, Club President 2006 to 2012). This proved to be the case for most who played in the Mens & Ladies Singles events recently.

However, the round robin games leading up to the eventual Champion can produce many exciting and quirky moments, and so often it is this that makes Lawn Bowls such a great sport.

The Ladies Singles attracted a boutique field, and the event ran using a two life system. In one of the earlier games Anne Osborn won comfortably over Jill Smith (21-1). On the other side of the draw, Julie Armstrong held her two lives intact throughout the day and qualified for the final.

In Saturdays last match, Anne and Jill met once again. Both players had one life remaining, and this time it was Jill Smith who prevailed (21-20), and booked herself a place to meet Julie in the final.

Her "never say never' attitude came to the fore once again in the first game against Julie, and in winning that, Jill forced a further match to decide the winner.

Julie Armstrong took control of the second game early, and quite simply, did not let Jill back into the game at any stage.

Congratulations to Julie, Ladies Singles Champion for 2020/21, and also to Jill for showing real tenacity after a such a shaky start.

Both Anne and Jill should keep the small piece of paper close by.....
